MATERIALS

We use kiln dried SPF lumber as building material unless otherwise specified.  Whenever possible, we use lumber that comes from SFI and FSC suppliers. Both of these labels are recognized for sustainable harvesting practices.  We use premium deck screws, and galvanized carriage bolts in our construction.

Kiln dried lumber has a lower content of water which helps to prevent the wood from warping or developing small cracks over time, resulting in more durable and stable furniture.  Kiln-drying can remove as much as 9/10ths of the lumber's internal moisture, making it more resistant to fungal decay.  It also helps kill insects, larvae, eggs, bugs, and mold, increasing the life of the furniture. Please know that all outdoor furniture is susceptible to mold.  The best way to avoid mold growth is to use a lumber like cedar or apply a finish.  Kiln drying wood will also crystallize most of the sap to help prevent oozing.  Furthermore, all our lumber gets planed and sanded for a clean uniform thickness.

FINISHES (We use low VOC products only.)

-Eco-friendly Water Seal and Stain
The water seal that we use is a low VOC's (Volatile Organic Chemicals) product.  It can come in many stain colors to achieve whatever look you want.  Water sealer is an erodible finish that isn't permanent, and typically lasts about two years in normal weather conditions.  With regular maintenance, much like the way you would stain a deck or fence, it will prolong the life of your park bench indefinitely.

Stain Color Choices:

-Aquaspar Marine Clear Coat
This is a more permanent finish that requires very little maintenance, but only comes in clear.  Clear finishes usually allow the wood to eventually turn gray.

-Low VOC Paint
Paint is a more permanent finish, but is opaque, and won't allow you to see the beautiful wood grain.

Why choose FP Design, here are some key differences between our products and our competitors':

- Our designs are extremely sturdy, consisting of recessed galvanized carriage bolts and premium fasteners, not glue.  If something unforeseen were to happen to your park bench, i.e. vandalism or natural incidents, with a glued design you will not be able to replace a part or make repairs if needed.

- We spend more time on our products, paying closer attention to detail.  Everything is made with quality lumber.  All the edges and corners of the park bench are sanded to prevent splintering.

- We can give your park bench a full weather treatment.  One of the major differences from competitors is our finishing process. Your park bench is almost entirely sealed and stained with an eco-friendly water seal BEFORE we assemble it, to ensure excellent coverage.  Most of my competitors will just treat the tops and seats AFTER they have assembled it, leaving the rest of the park bench completely exposed to the elements.

FP Design is completely open to customizing your park bench further.  Just let us know what you are thinking, and we can find a way to make it happen.

OUR STORY.

University of Cincinnati School of DAAP

Located in the university's main campus in Cincinnati, Ohio, DAAP (Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning) is consistently ranked as one of the most prestigious design schools in the U.S. and the world.  After completing the intensive 5 year curriculum for Industrial Design, our founder has set his eyes on changing the relationship people have with the products that fill their lives, as well as their relationship with the environment they exist in.

Beginnings in Portland, OR

FP Design started in Portland, OR in 2009.  Just a few years later, we were the main producer of eco-friendly outdoor furniture for the area.  With hundreds of products produced, FP Design has acquired an extensive list of well-known clients.

A new start in Cincinnati, OH

After over a decade of growing, FP Design relocated to Cincinnati, OH for a new start.  Our goal is twofold. First, to again become a main producer of eco-friendly outdoor furniture in the area.  Second, is to help expand interest in eco-friendly options, and create products that are not only functional, but are made to coexist with the environment.

The future of FP Design

Our goal is to be the leading supplier of eco-friendly products, and help change the thinking about our relationship with this beautiful place we live in.
